Over the last week, Windows Phone users have suffered problems with their OneDrive cloud storage app. Microsoft acknowledged the issue earlier in the week and it seems the company has acted quickly. Windows Phone users are now saying the service is back to normal after a fix was issued.
The problem appeared to be widespread as there were dozens of complaints from Windows Phone 8.1 users. Disgruntled OneDrive customers said they were unable to sync files to or from their smartphone.
Microsoft addressed the problem on Sunday, saying it was investigating the issue. The company returned on Monday to say it has found the problem and directed users to keep up to date on this page, which would add more information.
The monitor page also included a detailed Microsoft description of the problem:
“When using OneNote on Windows Phone, specifically Windows Phone 8.1, you may experience a sync interruption of your notebooks with OneDrive. The service side interruption started impacting customers sometime week of April 10, 2017 and may impact other Office Mobile apps as well. The most common issue reported by customers is that OneNote has stopped syncing to OneDrive, and shows error code 80070005 with a variation of these messages: “We can’t complete this task. Try again” or “You don’t have permission to edit this file and the sync has stopped. Contact the owner.””
Interestingly, Microsoft had already discussed this problem in another page, and seemed to link it to a similar issue with the OneNote app on Windows 10 Mobile:
“After installing a recent OneDrive update released during week of April 10, 2017 for Windows phones, you may find that OneNote for Windows 10 has stopped syncing to OneDrive, and shows the following error code 80070005 and messages: “We can’t complete this task. Try again” or “You don’t have permission to edit this file and the sync has stopped. Contact the owner.””

Either way, the company has now found the root cause and has patched the problem. This seems to have been an automatic update that happened behind the scenes. Users across several Windows Phone devices say their OneDrive service is now operating normally.
It is worth noting that this is just word of mouth at the moment. Microsoft has yet to officially update the support page.
Last month, Microsoft denied allegations that it was intentionally slowing down OneDrive on the Linux platform. The company said the service had been underperforming due to an issue that has since been resolved.
