It may be a while until we see a consumer HoloLens kit, but thankfully has the Windows Holographic Platform. With it, companies can release their own mixed reality headsets. The first will be a device from Lenovo.

Speaking to Twice.com on Monday, VP Mike Abary confirmed some more details about the headset. It will launch in the late summer to August and will cost less than the Oculus Rift.

The Rift sits at $499, with some predicting the Lenovo headset between $300 and $400. The lower range would be significantly more affordable and could get regular consumers more interested in MR.

Lenovo Headset Specs

Despite the lower price, the Lenovo headset comes with some impressive specs. Lenovo was showing a model off at CES with two 1440×1440 OLED displays. It will also have six degree inside-out tracking and two front facing cameras for AR apps.

Unlike the Rift, Lenovo's headset won't come with any motion controllers. It will, however, work with Windows Holographic peripherals and apps from the Windows Store. This is all housed in a smaller design, weighing 350g vs the Rift's 450. That should result in more comfort for longer sessions.

Unfortunately, there are no further details about the hardware of the device. It's not clear what processor, GPU, or RAM is. However, the device is looking less to compete with the Rift/Vive and more with the other Windows Holographic devices. In fact, Lenovo is launching a new desktop that works with Oculus and other VR headsets.

It will be interesting to see where exactly Lenovo's device sit in the market, and that will likely depend on its specs and price point. With hope, more information will arrive in the coming months.
