Microsoft Updates Surface Pro 3 in Preparation for Windows 10 Creators Update

A new driver update for the Surface Pro 3 readies the device’s USB 3.0 Card Reader for the Windows 10 Creators Update. The hybrid is still the second most used Surface product on the market.

has today issued an update for the . Specifically, the driver release is for units running the Anniversary Update. The company has updated the driver for Realtek USB 3.0 Card Reader. Aside from that, there is nothing new in terms of other driver updates or fixes.

By updating the USB 3.0 Card Reader, Microsoft is enabling SD card slot compatibility for Windows 10 .

If you are browsing the Update page, the new driver will show as: Realtek USB 3.0 Card Reader (10.0.14393.31230) ensure SD card slot compatibility with upcoming OS release. If you cannot pull in the update from the device, you can alternatively download it from the Surface Pro 3 Drivers and Firmware Page.

It is easy to forget that the 3 is still alive and kicking. The device was released way back in 2014 and was well received by customers and critics.

Indeed, in the opinion of yours truly, it marks the time where Microsoft's Surface brand pushed through the barrier from potential embarrassment to hugely interesting.

The culmination of the hybrid vision was realized with the Surface Pro 4, but the Pro 3 was the first sign Microsoft was moving in the right direction. Of course, we are about to get a Surface Pro 5 sometime this year. The new device will likely present Microsoft's ambition of creating a new computing category in full.

Supporting the Surface Pro 3

Not that the Surface Pro 3 should be resigned to the annuls of history. It may be approaching two generations old, but the Pro 3 is still hugely popular. The latest device-use statistics from AdDuplex show that the device is the second most used Surface Product.

The Surface Pro 3 is used by 27.4 percent of all Surface customers, trailing the Surface Pro 4 on 34.4 percent.

Considering a lot of people still use the device, it is good to see Microsoft still supporting the Pro 3. The company is clearly prepping the product to get the upcoming Windows 10 Creators Update.
