The Windows 10 Steps Recorder allows users to record steps to troubleshoot a problem and get a more accurate diagnosis. It seems that Microsoft is stopping support for the feature in favor of using the Xbox Game Recorder.

The Steps Recorder for Windows is a useful tool that many casual users may not really know about. Those who have missed out on the long-time troubleshooting companion are running out of time to use it. According to a report from ONMSFT, is discontinuing the Windows 10 Steps Recorder and will replace it with the Xbox Game Recorder.

Steps Recorder has been part of Windows since Windows 7. It is a program that records the exact steps taken when a problem occurs. This helps with troubleshooting because a user can send the recording to a support professional. The problem can then be more accurately diagnosed.

An ONMSFT reader spotted that the Windows 10 Steps Recorder is being discontinued via a pop-up window. The pop-up states that Microsoft is not supporting the feature anymore and that it will soon be removed from Windows 10.

The company says users can still record the screen via the Windows key + G. The tipster who first discovered this windows says it only occurred once and since then the Steps Recorder has worked normally.

Xbox Game Recorder Differences

The Xbox Game Recorder is a more all-encompassing tool, but it arguably lacks the true functionality behind the Steps Recorder. The outgoing feature allowed users to record specific steps to diagnose a problem. The Xbox Game Recorder takes a record of the whole screen activity in video form.

At the very least, the Windows 10 Steps Recorder is working fine at the moment. If you want to use it, here is how you can:

  • To open Steps Recorder, select the Start button, and then select Windows Accessories > Steps Recorder (in Windows 10), or Accessories > Problem Steps Recorder (in Windows 7 or Windows 8.1).
  • Select Start Record.
  • Go through the steps to reproduce the problem you're trying to diagnose. You can pause and resume the recording at any time.
  • (Optional) As you record, select Add Comment, use your mouse to select the part of the screen that you want to comment on, type your comment, and then select OK.
  • When you're done, select Stop Record.
  • Review the record of the steps you followed to make sure it shows what you want it to show. Select Save, name the .zip file, choose where to save it, and then select Save. Now you can attach and send this .zip file to the person helping you troubleshoot the problem on your PC. It can be viewed in any web browser.
