Microsoft: Windows 10 Mobile 14998 Released Too Soon

The company says Windows 10 Mobile preview 14998 for Insiders was released accidentally today. Microsoft adds users should avoid the build for now while the Insider team conducts an investigation.

Earlier today, it seemed as though has rolled out a new preview to the Fast Ring. However, Mobile build 14998 was not supposed to have been released. Now the company says members of the Windows Insider Program should avoid installing the update.

Microsoft also says it is investigating the premature release. , head of the Windows Insider Program, tweeted the mistake and added that “you don't need to install this one”.

Windows 10 Mobile users on the Inside have been starved of previews. Indeed, the last one to arrive was build 14977 way back on December 1. Insiders could be forgiven for wanting to pull in build 14998, but it is a risky business. Despite that urge, users should take Sakar's advice and avoid this build until Microsoft releases a stable version.

The update landed on the Fast Ring without being obviously saying it was for Windows 10 Mobile. It was instead labelled as a “Localization for English” update. Considering Microsoft offered nothing official, we suspected it was an unintentional release.

Windows 10 Mobile Previews

As mentioned, Windows 10 Mobile has been barren in terms of preview releases in the last six weeks. During that time, Microsoft released a couple of builds to Insiders for PC. Microsoft is obviously working on bringing build 14998 to Insiders in the coming days or weeks.

The last preview release was build 14997, which arrived at a time when Microsoft had to postpone PC updates because of a blocking bug. Among the changes in 14997 were:

  • We've changed the rendering technology used for many types of UWP app content, so please provide feedback through the Feedback Hub if you notice any new visual glitches in UWP apps.
  • Alarms sent by 3rd party alarm apps will now break through Cortana's Quiet Hours – we appreciate all the app developers who logged feedback requesting this, keep it coming!
  • We've removed the top-level option in Notification Settings to disable alarms on the lock screen – alarm reliability is a top priority for us, and we've found this setting was frequently enabled accidentally, without awareness that it would stop alarms from waking the phone when the phone was locked. For those who still wish to enable this setting, it's will continue to be available under the per-app notification settings.
  • Notifications from Settings can now be customized or disabled – option is available under Settings > System > Notifications > Settings

If you downloaded the premature Windows 10 Mobile build 14998, let us know in the comments if you had issues with the preview.
