Microsoft Discusses Benefits of Azure Backup in Stopping Ransomware

In a blog post, the company says the Azure Backup is the best-equipped platform for protecting backup data on-premises and in the cloud.

At the start of 2017, is reminding customers that Azure Backup is the perfect cloud platform to protect against . The company points out that malicious infrastructure attacks were up 3500% over 2016. The figure will likely be matched or higher in 2017, so improving organization-wide cyber security is crucial.

The data from 2016 was taken from the latest CRN Quarterly Ransomware Report. To help secure systems and cloud services, Microsoft says backing up critical information is important. More importantly, making sure these backups are secured can protect data from attack.

In a blog post, Microsoft says hackers are becoming more adept at neutralizing backup solutions. The company is using the start of the New Year to discuss how Azure Backup and the Operations Management Suite (OMS) protect cloud and on-premises backups from ransomware attacks.

The company also discussed some changes made to Azure Backup in November. Microsoft introduced new features for the service. At the time, the company said Azure Backup complies with FBI guidelines for protecting data:

  • “Focus on awareness and training. Because end users are often targeted, employees should be made aware of the threat of ransomware, how it is delivered, and trained on information security principles and techniques.
  • Regularly back up data and verify the integrity of those backups. Backups are critical in ransomware incidents; if you are infected, backups may be the best way to recover your critical data.
  • Secure your backups. Ensure backups are not connected to the computers and networks they are backing up. Examples might include securing backups in the cloud or physically storing them offline. It should be noted, some instances of ransomware have the capability to lock cloud-based backups when systems continuously back up in real-time, also known as persistent synchronization.”

Promoting Azure Backup

Microsoft is talking up the benefits of Azure Backup again. In the new blog post, the company says the service protects against attacks by having more security measures. The platform also warns customers sooner about attacks and extends the period in which they can recover data.

To give customers more security, Microsoft says only users with valid Azure credentials receive a security PIN. If an attack erases data, Backup will store it for up to 14 days.
