Microsoft Releases ISO Images for Windows 10 Preview Build 14986

Windows 10 Preview Build 14986 is the last Insider build of the year. Microsoft has introduced ISO images for users who want to download a build that comes with new Cortana and Windows Ink features.

That was technically true, although build 14986 later moved to the Slow Ring. Today, Microsoft has debuted the ISO images for the same preview release.

Microsoft explained last week that this is the last preview of 2016 to avoid users being left with unstable releases over Christmas and New Year.

preview build 14986 is also the first version of the platform to embrace Microsoft's Unified Update Platform (UUP). Announced in November, the platform simplifies the update process for Windows 10. UUP removes processing from devices onto the service, making updates faster.

Like the Universal Windows Platform, UUP functions across Windows 10 PC, Mobile, IoT, and HoloLens. Microsoft says more efficient updates will be noticeable when installing feature updates like the upcoming Creators Update.

Windows 10 Preview Build 14986 New Features

In this build, Microsoft has put a lot of attention on Cortana. More specifically, the virtual assistant is now more deeply integrated into music playback. She can now control music playback and work in more third-party music-focused applications. As well as playback control, Cortana can also manage volume and find information on tracks.

Windows Ink also received some key new additions. Microsoft has included a resume button for the platform, allowing users to continue on the sketch screen when they want to resume work. Other new features include an enhanced ruler rotation method and an invisible cursor when inking.
