Microsoft Rolls out New Power BI Mobile Build, with Improved Annotate and Share, Geographic Filtering, and More

The December update for Power BI mobile brings a wealth of new features, including custom URLs for image tiles, Apple watch improvements, and more. The changes push iOS to version 10.6.

Everything is starting to wrap up for the year, but the Power BI team has managed to announce some final changes before 2017. Android, iOS and Apple Watch have all received some significant improvements.

One of the biggest changes comes to Android, which can now filter reports by current location. introduced this feature to iOS earlier this year, so it's good to it coming to other platforms.

Power BI Mobile Changelogs

Despite this, the bulk of changes have come to iOS. Here's the full changelog for Version 10.6:

  • Request access to dashboards directly from the mobile app: When you scan a QR code for a dashboard tile that hasn't been shared with you, now you can ask the dashboard owner for access right from the Power BI app.
  • Annotate and Share Reports: We have added the ability to annotate and share reports with a new and improved user experience.
  • Load more than 100 rows in table: You asked and we listened. Now you can load more than 100 rows in table and matrix visualizations in the Power BI app. If you have network coverage, just scroll down a table and Power BI loads additional rows as you scroll.
  • Phone report improvements:
    • A new icon on a report indicates if it has been optimized for phones.
    • Phone reports and landscape reports now open in their correct orientation.
    • You can now refresh a report using pull to refresh.
  • Custom URL on image tile: If an image tile has a custom URL, now when you tap the tile you go directly to that URL, whether in or out of the Power BI app, without opening the tile in focus mode.
  • Apple watch improvements: You can now refresh Apple Watch data directly from the Watch app. In the dashboard index page, deep press to refresh your data. (note that the Power BI iPhone app must be running in the background on your iPhone for this to work).”

The changelog for Android is far less impressive, but also contains some useful improvements. Here's what new:

  • “Load >100 rows in tables – You asked, we listened. Load >100 rows in tables & matrixes in the Power BI app.
  • Phone reports – A new icon on a report indicates if it's optimized for phones. You can now refresh a report using pull to refresh.
  • Improved Custom URL navigation – Dashboard-tiles containing Custom URLs are now able to redirect users to reports within the app.”

Program Manager Romi Koifman also took the time to acknowledge the other changes to Power BI mobile this month. Chief among them is the new Android tablet preview that released on December 2nd.

However, the Power BI team has also made some under the hood changes. Microsoft has adjusted offline background refresh to reduce network usage. This should stop unwanted data charges and speed things up a little.

You can find more information about the changes on the Power BI blog. You'll also want to download the latest version of Power BI from the App Store and Google Play.
