Microsoft Updates OneDrive for iOS with Instant Preview and Scan Features

OneDrive for iOS now sits at version 8.6.1. It has improvements to offline document viewing camera information, performance on school accounts, and more.

has rolled out an update for its OneDrive iOS app, and it brings some significant features. Version 8.6.1 brings tweaks to the offline tab, a new scan feature, and more.

Users of Microsoft's Office Lens will be familiar with document scanning, and this offers similar functionality. Users can take a picture of their paper documents and whiteboard, and have them digitized on OneDrive.

The other major feature is the ability to view instantly view Word, Excel and PowerPoint files straight from the app. This reduces the need to download or navigate to other tabs and makes searching for the right document easy.

There are also some smaller changes based on customer feedback. You can see those in the changelog below:

  • “Instantly view your , Excel, and PowerPoint files in the app via our new instant previewers.
  • Go paperless with the new Scan feature! Like magic, Scan can digitize your whiteboards, documents, and business cards.
  • Thank you for your great feedback. On iPad, files opened from the offline tab will now take advantage of your entire screen.
  • Also thanks to your feedback, we have updated the details pane to include camera information.
  • Finally, we have improved upload reliability for users using their work or school accounts.”

The other improvements mostly address minor annoyances. However, the camera information is slightly more notable. Images in OneDrive will now show details such as the camera used, shutter speed and aperture. It also gives general image information like when the picture was taken, size, file type, and dimensions.

This is particularly useful for photographers, who can compare the and learn from the different settings they use on their camera.

In all, this is one of the biggest updates OneDrive for iOS has received in a while, and no doubt there's more coming after Christmas. Until then, you can get version 8.6.1 from the App Store.
