Mobile users could sympathize with BlackBerry users when ended support for the platform. Sure, WhatsApp is going strong on Windows, 's platform has had its share of major developers kill support. However, WhatsApp has now said that it will extend support for BlackBerry and Nokia devices.

The company had originally announced that BlackBerry devices and Nokia devices will be cut off by the end of this year. Because of this change, WhatsApp has extended support. Now the company says the app will remain supported until June 30, 2017. The devices getting an extended run are BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 smartphones.

“While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don't offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app's features in the future,” the company said at the time.

“This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp. If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone before the end of 2016 to continue using WhatsApp.”

Why the company decided to change its mind is unclear. There is no such luck for a rage of other aging platforms, like Microsoft's Windows Phone 7.x. Other platform builds getting cut are Android 2.1 Eclair/2.2 Froyo, as well as the iPhone 3GS/iOS 6. All of these platforms will see support ended at the end of this month.

WhatsApp Windows 10 Support

We have mentioned before that WhatsApp has shown more interest in Windows 10 than other major developers. The app has been kept up to date next to other platforms and scored features like video calling early.

Just recently, Build 2.16.300 was introduced with two-step verification. Video calling allows face-to-face chats to any other users around the world. The company pointed out that for this feature users will need Windows Phone 8.1 of newer.
