Microsoft Updates PowerBI.com with Support for ArcGIS Maps Preview

ArcGIS Maps is no longer exclusive to Power BI desktop, bringing capable map visualization tools to the browser.

-

During Ignite 2016, announced support for ArcGIS Maps for the desktop version of Power BI. Following an outpour of requests, the ability is finally available as part of the online dashboard.

For those unfamiliar, ArcGIS is a cloud-based mapping tool that allows users to create scalable, high-resolution, map-based data visualizations. You can now take advantage of it when creating a report on PowerBI.com, which you can then share and pin to the dashboard.

Though the service is now on the web, it could be a little while before it reaches mobiles and tablet. Senior program manager Lukasz Pawlowski states, “ArcGIS Maps for Power BI will be coming to the Power BI mobile applications next.” So we can expect the functionality fairly soon.

Power BI for Android Update

Speaking of the mobile application, Power BI for Android just got a significant update. The improvements are relatively small but bring some great user experience improvements. Here's Microsoft's full changelog for the build:

  • Favorites management: Manage your favorite dashboards list from the mobile device.
  • My workspace quick access: If you're not using groups, you can now access your My Workspace directly from the global navigation button.
  • Intune Mobile Application Management preview: Secure the app using Intune mobile application management service with any mobile device management service or without it.”

The support for Intune is particularly useful. It means that admins can now restrict employees functions on mobile devices. This saves from potential security issues and can disable the ability to copy and paste data within the corporate app, among other things.

Due to that recent release, it might be a while until we see the functionality on Android. Microsoft tends to bundle updates with several new features, but it could still come within a month or two.

Until then, you can check out the functionality on the web portal at PowerBI.com. It's also worth reading Microsoft's documentation, which explains exactly what's possible with ArcGIS.
