Microsoft Updates Photos for Windows 10 with Inking Capabilities

Version number 16.1111.1 of Photos for Windows 10 PC also brings new filters to improve editing options and adds light mode to the app.

users who like the native app are in for a new update today. One feature from this release has been doing the rounds on the Windows Insider Program Fast Ring since October. However, is now bringing it to all users with a wide roll out on Windows 10.

The new update for the app brings it up to version number 16.1111.10000.0. The big deal here is support for inking and pen. This is a major development as it lets users draw on any image, edit it, and share it. Inking choices include a pen, marker, or pencil as an input method. Color choices for creations are also available.

Microsoft says it has also improved the editing process in general. The company says there are new filters for users to play with, enhancing the final look of an image.

There is also a new light mode added to compliment the existing dark mode. Users have the ability to change between the two at will. This is more of an aesthetic choice by the company.

It ties the app into Windows 10 in general. Until now Photos lacked a Light Mode, so it would contrast with the system when Photos was used.

Microsoft issued the following changelog with version 16.1111.10000.0:

  • New Look: Plus, you can set Photos to light or dark mode.
  • Draw on Anything: And share the animated ink!
  • Better Editing: Check out our new filters!

Under the Photos Hood

As always, this update also makes some minor tweaks to the overall feel of Photos. This includes updates for performance and to squash bugs.

It is worth remembering that while Photos crosses mobile and PC, it is not a full Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app just yet. Sure, it has UWP connections built in, but it has not yet been rolled out properly for Xbox and HoloLens. Gamers on the Xbox One console know that Photos is coming, though.
