Microsoft Announces Second Minecraft Hour of Code

Teaming with code.org, Microsoft is using Minecraft for a 60 minute tutorial to show the basics of coding and computer science.

-

has announced a with Code.org to bring the second Hour of Code tutorial. Announced on the Mojang blog, the 60 minutes of tutorial teach users the basics of coding. Of course, this is done using the fun backdrop of Minecraft.

The company points out that this lets users actually learn something over an hour. In the tutorial, the concepts of game design will be introduced. Computer science methods will also be taught in “easy-to-understand steps”.

Mojang says getting to grips with code takes much longer, but this is a good base to start. Last year's Hour of Code was a huge success and has been played over 31 million times. It is the most popular upload on Code.org.

Now the new Minecraft Hour of Code has been improved beyond last year, Mojang adds. Either way, users can get the 2015 and 2016 at code.org/minecraft. To highlight the event, the company has rolled out the video you can see above.

Minecraft Expansion

When Microsoft bought Mojang, it acquired one of the most successful games in history. However, the company also sees the game has something deeper. Microsoft believes the world-building title can transform areas as diverse as design and education.

As is evidenced by the Hour of Code, the game can also be used to teach how games are developed. Minecraft has become much more than a 100 million selling game.

Minecraft: Education Edition was released earlier this month. It has debuted in 50 countries around the world and is available in 11 languages.

The service gives schools and educators a customized version of the game. Education can be used to expand creative work and also encourage collaboration and teamwork.
