Microsoft has rolled out a new tool called System Center Operations Manager Assessment. The service arrives in preview form and will check System Center Operations Manager products for functionality. The tool compares how well the products perform against Microsoft’s best practices recommendations.
In an official post to announce the preview, Microsoft says:
“System Center Operations Manager Assessment solution on OMS assesses your Operations Manager environment against best practices that were collected over the years from Microsoft Knowledge Base articles and field engineers across multiple environments, industries and scenarios. This solution provides a health check and risk assessment of the Operations Manager environment and recommendations to fix the issues identified.”
The new tool works with System Center Operations Manager 2012 Service Pack 1 and System Center Operations Manager 2012 R2. It provides a “health and risk assessment” based on the comparisons detailed above.
Using System Center Operations Manager Assessment
Once an assessment is made it is compiled into a graphical information form for users to view. This is presented in the Operations Management Suite. As you can see in the screenshot (main image), the graphic shows recommended action and gauges how important they are.
Customers will have to turn on the System Center Operations Manager Assessment tool if they want to use it. It needs to be enabled for a selected management server. The tool must be configured as a “run as” account. Users can enable the tool by following the next steps:
Enable the rule for a specific Management Server
- In the Authoring workspace of the Ops Manager console, search for the Rule “Microsoft System Center Advisor SCOM Assessment Run Assessment Rule” in Rules pane
- From the search results appeared, select the one with “Type: Management Server”
- Right click on the above selected rule and click on Overrides ? For a specific object of class: Management Server
- Select the Management Server that this rule should execute on from the available Management servers
Once enabled, the assessment runs for seven days to perform its check. Customers are able to reduce the timeframe to a one-day period.
