When Microsoft announced its Windows 10 Creators Update last month, it landed with a thump. It is a feature-rich upgrade and the company covered many of those features at its event. A later video discussed more capabilities of the Creators Update, but didn’t cover all bases. It seems there are some surprises still to come.
The latest Windows 10 preview release for Windows Insiders comes with one interesting update. Build 14965 is a Creators Update preview and it features a virtual trackpad for Windows 10.
Microsoft explains that the feature allows users to control monitors with a tablet instead of a mouse. This virtual control will allow right-click and left-click mouse motions and control of the cursor.
With the Windows 10 Creators Update, the virtual trackpad will sit in the taskbar. It will only appear on the tablet screen if selected through a touchpad icon in the notification area.

With the feature enabled, users can customize gestures through the Windows 10 settings. Microsoft describes the feature on its Windows Blog:
“You can now drive content on a second display from your tablet without ever having to attach a mouse. The virtual touchpad lets you do more with a tablet and a second screen – just connect to another monitor, PC, or TV, go to Action Center and tap on the “Project” Quick Action to extend your screen. Use it just like you would a physical touchpad to control content on the connected screen.”
While hardly earth shattering, this feature brings an extra level of control to Windows 10. It will definitely appeal to tablet users or those who want a second screen experience. We also guess this kind of touch interaction will have implications for the upcoming creative-focused platform upgrade.
