Focused Inbox Coming to All Outlook Versions, Microsoft Updates

An editor’s update on a Focused Inbox blog post says the feature will come to Outlook on iOS, Mac, and Android from the end of this month for Office 365 users. Windows 10 Outlook users will have to wait until November at the earliest.

Outlook users will be getting a new feature in the coming weeks. has explained that the Focused Inbox feature will be coming in the next few weeks. The bad news is it will be coming to non-Windows platforms fire, the company announced.

The announcement was made rather quietly. The Office blog had actually created a “how to” post that showed users how they can better manage the Outlook inbox. This included discussing the Focus Inbox and how it works. However, the post did not say when the feature will be available.

Microsoft returned later with an editor's note update that said the following: First Release users will become Focused Inbox enabled starting in late October. Worldwide rollout will take 4 – 6 weeks. Office 365 Standard Release users will be enabled in mid to late November and will take 6-8 weeks to be available worldwide. Once enabled, users will be able to see the Focused Inbox in Outlook for Mac, iOS, and the web immediately. Outlook 2016 for Windows and Outlook for Mobile will show the Focused Inbox in November.”

So, Outlook users on rival platforms like Mac, iOS, and Android will see the feature in Office 365 in the coming weeks. However, those on Microsoft's own Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile will have to wait. The company says mid-November at the earliest for those users to see it.

At least the wait is not too long, but it is another example of the company focusing on other platforms before Windows.

Focused Inbox

The feature makes organizing an inbox easier. It separates emails between two folders. The main box will be the primary folder, where emails from common contacts and important contacts will be stored. A second inbox category will house emails that are not tagged as important. Users can tag emails accordingly to make them important (primary) or non-important (secondary).

“Focused Inbox is not meant to take control of your mail, but rather work with you to prioritize what is important to you. What lands in your Focused Inbox is determined by an understanding of the people you interact with often, and the content of the email itself (e.g., newsletters, machine generated mail, etc.). If you need to fine tune your Focused Inbox, just use the “Move to Focused” or “Move to Other” options.”
