Microsoft Launches Windows 10 Preview Build 14946 with New Touchpad Gestures

Windows 10 Build 14946 brings new Wi-Fi settings, better text prediction on mobile, and important fixes for Windows Live and Hyper-V

-

Yesterday, released a new Insider build that includes a couple of new features and a number of improvements. The main change is a new touchpad panel in settings that allows for customizable gestures.

Users can now use fingers to search with Cortana, switch apps, and a plenty of other functions. You can switch songs, switch desktops and snap windows without even having to click.

Other Changes in Windows 10 Build 14946

The settings changes are not exclusive to touchpads, with a new drop down in Wi-Fi settings too. You can choose when to turn Wi-Fi back on, between manually, one hour, four hours and a day.

There are also plenty of minor improvements across mobile and desktop:

  • “Option to prevent autocorrection (Mobile)
  • Option to remove a word from user dictionary (Mobile)
  • The following keyboards to now support text prediction: Lithuanian, Latvian, Estonian, Slovene, Bulgarian, Albanian, Macedonian, Afrikaans, Galician, Basque, Swahili, Bangla in Bangladesh, Georgian, Azerbaijani (in Latin script), Kazakh, Armenian, Hausa (in Latin script) and Uzbek (in Latin script).
  • Optional components such as Hyper-V and Bash should remain installed after updating to this build.
  • We have fixed the issue where signing into games that use Xbox Live would not work. You should be able to sign-in to Xbox Live in games in this build.
  • Fixed the issue causing Microsoft Edge to sometimes crash on launch, or when you type in address bar or try to open a new tab. You no longer need to run the script.
  • We fixed the issue causing touch scrolling to be too sensitive in apps, such as Microsoft Edge.
  • Fixed an issue where Explorer.exe would hang when attempting to open considerably large .MOV files.
  • We fixed an issue that could result in the network icon occasionally getting into a state where a red X would display in the taskbar despite an active internet connection, until the device had been restarted.
  • Fixed an issue where if the device's brightness was automatically adjusted after being woken from sleep, the brightness level shown in the Action Center's Brightness Quick Action might not reflect the current brightness of the device.
  • We fixed an issue leading to Narrator not tracking focus on the Start Menu All apps list or tiles.
  • Fixed an issue potentially resulting in the ‘Open with…' dialog displaying with two entries for Calculator after tapping the Calculator key on a keyboard or running the Calculator app.”

This update is one of the biggest we've seen in so far. Though most of the improvements are minor, the touch functionality could prove very useful, as will some of the other features.

However, be aware that you might not be able to update if you have Bitdefender, Kapersky, F-Secure or Malwarebytes. You should be able to roll-back to a previous build, though, so there's no harm done.

Gamers may also want to sit this one out. Large Windows Store games like ReCore, Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3 etc. are all crashing on launch. It's not yet clear how common this is.
