Xbox Head Mike Ybarra Talks about UWP on Xbox, Scorpio and Cortana

Xbox chief Mike Ybarra went into a little more detail about the future of UWP on Xbox, Scorpio exclusivity and more, but was reluctant to give new details.

has been charging ahead with its Windows to Xbox compatibility plans, and with that comes some questions about the future of Xbox. Thankfully, Windows Central got the chance to put some of these to Mike Ybarra, the Xbox platform chief.

The interview covered a number of topics, including UWP, and Scorpio. Unfortunately, Ybarra was fairly evasive in most of the answers, and wasn't willing to give too much new info.

UWP on Xbox

However, Ybarra did provide some much-needed clarity about the company's plans for Xbox and PC:

“It is our goal to bring the best of to and to bring the best of Xbox One to Windows 10 while embracing the unique capabilities and differences of each individual platform,” he said. “We're not out to turn the console into a PC, or vice versa.”

Of course, this led to questions about Cortana integration in Xbox One, but there wasn't much insight there.

According to Ybarra, Microsoft will “continue bringing more features [to Cortana] over time.” He went on to say that there a lot of possibilities for Cortana on the One, and Microsoft will continue to bring the best gaming experience to customers.

Windows Central's Jez Corden also mentioned the other drawback of UWP – lack of high profile apps. However, when asking what was coming next, Ybarra simply replied, “We can't disclose any app developers plans, but we're excited by the momentum and can't wait to see what developers create.”

Project Scorpio

Another topic interest was Project Scorpio and ensuring the games work on all three devices. Ybarra doesn't seem to think it will be much of an issue.

Most developers already have experience tailoring their apps to different hardware. On PC, for example, a variety of hardware needs to be accounted for. Likewise, some publishers had released on both the Xbox 360 and One.

We expect developers to do similar with Xbox One vs. Scorpio titles, said Ybarra. “Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for developers to target multiple devices including Xbox One S, Project Scorpio and the full breadth of Windows 10 devices.”
