Microsoft Releases Windows 10 Redstone 2 Build 14931 to Insiders

Microsoft has rolled out Windows 10 Redstone 2 build 14931, and it comes with improvements to Maps, Feedback Hub and Skype Previews, as well as native USB Audio 2.0 support.

Apple has ditched the headphone jack, but is instead looking to support more existing hardware. Wednesday's build 14931 adds support for USB Audio 2.0 and updates a number of apps.

Changes have come to the Feedback Hub, Maps and Skype Preview. In addition, issues with Alarms & Clock and Voice Recorder have been fixed.

Insider head Donar Sarkar states that “this build doesn't have any notable new features,” but there are a few minor changes to apps that you'll be happy to see. Here's a summary:

  • Feedback Hub: Dark mode, showing original feedback author in feedback details, new settings page.
  • Maps App: You can now check traffic to and from common locations via a Traffic icon in the app bar. This shows detailed conditions along the route for home or work. It also supports light and dark mode, and you can change the map theme also.
  • Skype Preview: We already covered this here, but Windows 10 Mobile users can now send SMS messages on desktop via Skype.
  • Native USB Audio: Windows 10 now supports USB Audio 2.0 natively for devices with inbox class driver. However, the release doesn't support recording, which will arrive in a later build.

This update also fixes the black screen issue when switching account, and lets native Windows 10 apps like Calculator and Voice Recorder to work after an update.

Unfortunately, there won't be any builds for mobile this week. Last week's build caused issues on some devices, such as an inability to unlock phones and SIM card problems. According to Sarkar, the consensus from Insiders is that they should hold off on a new build until this is resolved.

Speaking of issues, there are a number of them in 14931. Here's Microsoft's known list:

  • “While using Narrator and Groove Music, if you navigate to the progress bar while a song is playing then Narrator will continually speak the progress of the song e.g. update with the current time of the progress bar every second. The result is you will be unable to listen to the song or hear any other control you navigate to.
  • Oracle VM VirtualBox will crash on launch after upgrading to this build.
  • Optional components may not work after upgrading to this build. To get it working again, go to “Turn Windows features on or off”, scroll down and check the right optional component and click ok.  After a reboot, the optional component will be enabled again.
  • For keyboard users, using tab to navigate the Settings app will not work in this build. The arrow keys should work as a temporary workaround.
  • Tencent apps and games will cause your PC to bugcheck (bluescreen).”
