Microsoft Announces Upcoming Features for Skype Preview App

The Skype Preview team took to its blog to discuss the recent changes to SMS and MMS messaging through a Windows 10 PC. The company also revealed some of the upcoming features for the app.

has been building up the UWP app for the whole summer. The app has been subject to preview updates through the Windows Insider Program. After the Anniversary Update last month, the app has been available. Now the Skype team has detailed features that will come to PC and Mobile in the coming weeks/months.

The roadmap is detailed in a new blog post from Microsoft. It is focused on messaging and what users can expect to see soon on the Skype Preview UWP app. Just yesterday, Skype rolled out a new SMS relay feature. The update gives users the ability to send and receive SMS and MMS messages from a Windows 10 PC. This can be achieved when Skype is the messaging default on a device.

SMS relay means a PC can become a messaging device without needing to use a phone. It also lets users see message and respond to them from a computer. This is possible because of the Universal Windows Platform nature of the Skype Preview app. Of course, you need to be running Windows 10 Anniversary on mobile and PC for this to work.

In the blog post, the Skype team detailed some more messaging feature coming soon. The company also expanded on other general inbound features:

  • Improved messaging – message sent status, copy and paste quoted messages, read/unread line indicator, preview a URL in chat, keyboard shortcuts, drag and drop of files and photos, drag and drop of URLs from browsers, and video messaging.
  • Easier calling – start call or conversation from profile page, group calls continue even when the initiator leaves, audio/video device settings, loudspeaker improvements.
  • Additional Windows Mobile updates – transparent tile, video calls will default to loud speaker for video calls, and improved back button navigation.

Back last month, the new Skype app arrived on Windows 10 Mobile for the first time. That was when the platform received the Anniversary Update, a couple of weeks after it arrived on Windows 10 PCs. The service is the product of Microsoft's decision to unify the Skype experience once again. The company had previously made the inexplicable decision to separate services across Windows apps.
