Microsoft’s New Test: Edge Browser Still Best for Battery-Efficiency

The latest round in the 2016 web browser battery test war has continued. Responding to Google, Microsoft’s Edge test shows the browser is the best battery-efficient amongst its rivals.

-

is really driving its Edge browser is the most battery-efficient line. The company has been targeting its rivals this year with a series of test to show Edge's battery saving prowess. This time, Microsoft has re-run a test it conducted last quarter to show how its browser is still on top. Also, the company targeted a recent test to show that Edge still beats Chrome.

Strap in, there is plenty of backstory surrounding this test. To show the poor battery performance of Chrome 46, Microsoft released a video test in June. The side by side comparison actually started a major browser war incident.

That first video showed that Microsoft's Edge browser was the best performing browser for battery life. While the implication that Chrome sucks for battery could not be argued, another browser company was ticked off by Microsoft. took Microsoft to task over its test. The company came back with its own test that showed Opera is better for battery. However, Opera's test was unfairly weighted as its browser had power saver and ad-blocker turned on.

The score was finally settled when an independent test was conducted. This third test showed that indeed Edge is the best performing browser for battery life.

New Test

Last week the saga took a new twist when Google showed that Chrome 53 was vastly improved in terms of battery efficiency compared to Chrome 46. However, Microsoft is not happy with this test and has re-run its test to show Google's market-leading browser how it is done. To ensure fairness, the company has open-sourced its test on GitHub and published its methods.

Also, Microsoft points out that in its test, Google did not compare next to other browsers. To fix this, the company run a test against Firefox, Chrome, and Opera. This new video test shows Edge running with the latest updates from the Anniversary Update.

Microsoft looped a video on Vimeo on Surface Books running the major browsers and found that Edge was on top. The company provided a bit of a comparison against its findings back in June:

  • Edge previously lasted 7 hours and 22 minutes, now it kept going for 8 hours and 47 minutes.
  • Chrome previously lasted 4 hours and 19 minutes, now it kept going for 6 hours and 3 minutes.
  • Firefox previously lasted 5 hours and 9 minutes, now it kept going for 5 hours and 11 minutes.
  • Opera previously lasted 6 hours and 18 minutes, now it kept going for 7 hours and 8 minutes.
