Samsung Entices Windows Phone 8.1 Users with Smart Switch Update

The Samsung Smart Switch app has been updated with support for Microsoft's Windows Phone 8.1 operating system, making it easier than ever for users to move from Lumia to Samsung.

The amount of users on the Windows operating system has been steadily declining for a while now, and it looks like is looking to capitalize on that dip. The company has updated its Smart Switch app to make it easier for users to make the switch.

Previously, Samsung supported only Android, iOS 5, Blackberry 7 and higher. However, the new update supports the transfer of data from Windows devices, making it easier to switch than ever before.

What Can You Transfer?

Of course, the big question is how much data you can transfer, and how easy it is. Samsung lists the following on its Play Store posting:

  • “Contacts,
  • Calendar(Device content only)
  • Messages
  • Photos
  • Music (DRM free content only, Not supported for iCloud)
  • Videos (DRM free content only)
  • Call logs
  • Memos
  • Alarms
  • Wi-Fi
  • Wallpapers
  • Documents”

The service appears to support pretty much everything. However, given the closed nature of the OS compared to Android it's possible there will be some limitations. The list varies depending on device, and we're guessing this is Samsung's best case scenario.

Samsung Smart Switch supports both wired and wireless transfers, but it's not yet known if Windows 8.1 is compatible with the latter. Whatever the case, it's a lot simpler than manual transfer, and could convince some users that are worried about losing their data.

Release Notes

This version of Smart Switch also comes with a number of other improvements, which you can read below:

  1. “Window Mobile support (Win OS 8.1, Smart Phone only)
  2. Message Backup&Restore speed improvement
  3. iOS9 iCloud : Additional content – Document(iWorks: Pages/Keynotes/ Numbers)
  4.  Bug fix.”

Excluding number one, the most notable change is further support for iOS 9 iCloud, which Samsung has released at a good time. Apple's launch event was met with varying opinions, and users looking to switch probably won't have updated to iOS 10.

You can get the of the latest version from the Google Play Store.
