Microsoft Releases First Office Insider Fast Build on Windows, Slow Ring Update for Mac

Microsoft has released the first Office Insider Fast ring build for Windows, bringing "Shared with Me" functionality to desktop. A new Slow ring build is also available for Mac, which adds focus mode, color guides and more.

A little over a week ago, announced the extension of the Office Insider Fast ring program to all devices. Previously, the program was only available on Mac, but it's now available on Windows desktop and mobile.

The build number is 16.0.7329.1000, but the update may show as Version 1610, Microsoft's new naming convention. Naturally, 16 is the year and 10 is the month, so the build should release to the public in October.

Build 1610 for Windows Insider Fast

Unfortunately, there aren't any significant changes in this build. However, Microsoft suggests you check out the following new feature:

“After you have the Fast build installed, check out the Shared with Me feature, which makes it easy to find documents, , and presentations that others have shared with you from OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint Online.”

If it sounds familiar, that's because Android received the functionality last month. It's similar to the feature in Drive, and lets you see a list of documents that other people have shared with you via the “Invite people” menu.

In addition to the Windows release, Microsoft has pushed out a build to the Slow ring on Mac.We covered the new functionality when it leaked last month, but here's a quick refresher:

  • PowerPoint Designer: You supply the pictures, we'll supply high-quality, professional design ideas for your slides. (Feature requires an subscription.)
  • Color your guides: In PowerPoint, choose a color to make your guides stand out against the slide background. (Feature requires an Office 365 subscription.)Image
  • Focus mode: In Word, click View > Focus to hide the ribbon, panes, and status bar so you can focus solely on your content. (Feature requires an Office 365 subscription.)”

Interestingly, the “Trim audio and video files” features from the leak are missing in this build, so it's possible Microsoft is holding it back for a later update.

If you're part of the Office Insider program, you can get your hands on these two builds by going to Update Options> Update now. Be sure to read about the latest changes to Windows and Mac on Microsoft Answers.
