Google says it Solved Battery Life Issues in Chrome 53

A new video shows that Google has improved battery life by over 2 hours in Chrome 53. The browser is well known for being poor at maintaining battery when browsing.

has released a video on its YouTube channel that talks up Chrome 53. The latest release of the company's web browser brings a number of improvements. The new video focuses on the enhanced battery of Chrome 53 when running on Windows machines. The company says it has made big improvements.

There is a load of background here. Firstly, Chrome is notorious for having poor battery life. Users have long complained that it drains battery too quickly. Side by side comparisons with other browsers shows that indeed Chrome sucks when it comes to maintaining battery life.

In the new video, Google attempts its own side by side comparison, putting Chrome 53 against Chrome 46. The company says that the new browser manages to add 2hr 12m more watch time with a single charge. Using a Surface, Google shows that Chrome 53 will perform better on sites like Facebook and YouTube.

Edge vs. Chrome

To highlight the poor battery performance of Chrome 46, Microsoft released a video earlier in the year. The side by side comparison actually started a major browser war incident.

The original video indeed showed that Microsoft's Edge browser was the best performing browser for battery life. While the implication that Chrome sucks for battery could not be argued, another browser company was not happy.

Opera took Microsoft to task over its test. The company came back with its own test that showed Opera is better for battery. However, Opera's test was unfairly weighted as its browser had power saver and ad-blocker turned on.

The score was finally settled when an independent test was conducted. This third test showed that indeed Edge is the best performing browser for battery life. And through this saga, Chrome escaped from what was the focus … its battery performance sucked. Hopefully, Google has now solved that.
