Microsoft Photos Appears in Xbox Store, Coming Soon

Microsoft Photos has now appeared on the Xbox Store, but users have been disappointed to find that opening it results in a "Coming soon" dialogue.

-

users were excited to see the app show up in the Xbox Store today, but unfortunately, the hype was short-lived. Users loading the app simply receive a “Coming Soon” message.

Microsoft pulled a similar stunt with the new Groove app. Users have questioned the practice and wondered why Microsoft couldn't simply wait until a functional release is ready. In some cases, users had to install the app twice to gain access.

was first spotted by user /u/ guilherme07 on Reddit, and the subsequent “Your photos and videos are coming to Xbox One. Stay tuned.” by /u/HyperG16.

The Store description for the app reads:

“The best place to enjoy, organize, edit, and share all your digital memories. It brings together photos and videos from all your devices, enhances them to make great photos even better, and organizes them into beautiful albums for you.”

Windows Camera also released on the store recently, but fails to save images or videos. It's possible that Microsoft Photos will remedy this situation and provide cloud sync.

Windows Maps

Another app enabled by the Xbox Summer Update is Windows Maps. Users started to see the “ready to download” option on August 2nd, but it came with the same caveat.

Launching Windows Maps results in a “Coming soon to Xbox” message just like Photos. When either of the apps will release is not yet known. The placeholder for Maps has been around for three weeks now, so users could be waiting for a month or more to get their hands on either.

As the months go on it's we'll probably see even more UWP applications making their way to the Xbox One. Microsoft may now need to have a serious think about whether this is an acceptable practice, given the bandwidth limits of some users.
