You may have missed our coverage last month on Microsoft Authenticator. The application has now come to Android and iOS, and the Apple version has received an update already.
The main addition in 4.0.4 beta is push notification support. This feature only previously worked for Azure AD due to bugs, so it’s good to see iOS catching up with Android.

As always, we have included the release notes for this build below:
“This build includes session approval (push notification) for Microsoft accounts, as well as updates to the Microsoft Account (MSA) SDK.
If you already use your Microsoft Account within this app via OTP codes, you must re-add your account in order to take advantage of session approval. The recommended path is to make sure you have an alternate proof (sms or email) on your account, then remove the old account (swipe right from the accounts list) from Authenticator, and last, add a new Personal account.”
As well as push notifications, the changes also come to the Microsoft Accounts SDK. Previously, you would go straight to a QR code scan when adding an account. Now, you’re asked to choose whether the account is personal, work or school or other.
If you’d like to try out the new additions, the beta signup process is a little different than usual. You’ll need to email [email protected] with the following information:
- Full Name
- Apple ID
You’ll then be enrolled in the beta manually, so be aware that it could take some time out of working hours. If you’d rather stay on the most stable build, then we can’t give an exact date for the rollout. However, we can see why it would take longer than week or two.
