Windows 10 Anniversary Update Causing Blue Screen of Death When PCs Connect to an Amazon Kindle

Users are reporting that they are getting BSOD crashes when they connect their Windows 10 Anniversary Update running PC to Amazon’s Kindle e-readers.

We have already seen a few issues caused by the Anniversary Update. It now seems that the latest major upgrade from is also causing problems for a specific device. More specifically, when an Amazon Kindle is connected to a PC with the Anniversary Update it causes a BSOD.

Blue screens of death are never a good thing of course and this seems to be a common occurrence. Dozens of Kindle users have reported the problem on forums, including Microsoft's support forum. So far the problem is only being reported by users who have upgraded to the Anniversary Update. It is troubling that the BSOD occurs the instant the Kindle is connected via USB.

Users are understandably pissed off with the situation. On the official support page, user ChrisBollard said it was sloppy:

“I'm having this issue with my Asus laptop. Clean install and updated to Ann Version a few days ago. Now EVERY time I plug in my Kindle Paperwhite I get the BSOD! Haven't had DSOD for 5-10 years! Microsoft!!! Really Kindle and you don't test the update with that?

Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy….. If I didn't hate the EvilApplEmpire as much as I do I would consider making the change

This is the second major W10 issue I've had. The first rendered my work laptop unusable for job I needed it for; it corrupted the BWF I was editing and copying. Luckily a co-worker had a MacBook…..”

The situation seems to affect any USB port, although it is sporadic. Some say they only get the BSOD when they connect a Kindle via USB 3.0. However, others say they also get the crash through USB 2.0. Of course, there are also those who say they have not experienced any problems.

Growing List of Problems

Windows 10 Anniversary Update arrived with a number of flaws. The update has been screwing up connected webcams and rendering them useless. Microsoft is also still working on a fix that saw many PCs freeze when installing the upgrade.

The Windows Insider Program is supposed to help in rooting out these problems. However, it seems a major release always comes with its fair share of problems. Hopefully Microsoft can work to solve all these issues quickly.
