Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg Praises Project Scorpio, Confirms VR Exclusivity

The head of Xbox games marketing talks about Scorpio, VR, and the future of console gaming.

Xbox One has consistently been outsold by its competitor, but due to the new S console released last month, it finally overtook the PS4. Microsoft’s head of Xbox games marketing Aaron Greenberg thinks that this upwards trend will continue with Scorpio.

In an interview with Engadget, the employee said,  “there appears to be a lot of demand and interest around Project Scorpio, and we think it’s going to be a pretty big success. If the games and the content deliver, which I think they will do, I think it will change the way we think about the future of console gaming.”

Greenberg also talks a little about Xbox One’s strategy going forward, and how they will gain ground against Sony. Their primary focus, he says, is growing the user base of Microsoft games. From there, demand for the console should grow naturally.

However, it appears that the company’s true focus is on multi-platform gamers:

“We’re innovating in a way where we know a lot of gamers are multi-device gamers — they don’t just buy one system — and so we want to be able to have the same types of experiences on Xbox Live, the same games, the same friends, both in the living room on their console or at work, on vacation or at school on their PC. You should be able to stay connected, and play the same games through things like Play Anywhere. That’s really been where we’ve been focused.”

Xbox head Phil Spencer said at E3 that all accessories, games, and devices that work on Scorpio would also work on the Xbox One. As Engadget pointed out, however, that’s not technically accurate. Microsoft plans to support VR headsets on Scorpio, but not any other console.

Greenberg responded to the allegation, clearing up their ideology on compatibility. The idea is that everything that works on Xbox One will work on project Scorpio, not the other way around, as Spencer suggested.

About VR specifically, he says:

“That space, we don’t think of that as console gaming, we think of that as high-fidelity VR…we don’t think of that as console gaming, we think of that as high fidelity VR, and so with the VR experiences those will be new things that you will get on Project Scorpio.”

It’s a strange way of thinking about it but confirms what people have been saying for a while: some VR games will only be coming to Scorpio.
