Microsoft Unveils SharePoint Framework Developer Preview

SharePoint Framework is now available in GitHub as a developer preview. Microsoft says the framework brings more improvements to the SharePoint service and will likely be launched to on-premises customers in 2017.

has been steadily updating and improving the SharePoint experience over the last few months. The company is still trying to grow SharePoint Server to employees, as we reported earlier in the month. With further improvement in mind, Microsoft has made SharePoint Framework Developer Preview available.

Customers can check out the release in GitHub. This is the first public preview release for SharePoint Framework. However, Microsoft has lived up to the promise it made at the Future of SharePoint event to expand functionality in the service. Microsoft says it continues to build on features added through the year, giving clients numerous tools:

With this initial release, you can start building client-side web parts using modern script development tools and the SharePoint Workbench (a new development test surface), and you can deploy your client-side web parts to classic web part pages in Developer tenants. In addition to plain JavaScript projects, the SharePoint Framework works alongside common scripting frameworks, such as AngularJS, and we're expanding our tools for these frameworks. For example, you can use React along with components from Office UI Fabric React to quickly create experiences based on the same components we are using in Office 365.”

Availability

Microsoft has made an overview of the framework available on GitHub, as well as some early documentation. Also available is a walkthrough series to help user understand the framework APIs.

Future plans include expanding support of SharePoint Framework out of Developer Preview. Microsoft says it wants to integrate the “full set” of Office 365 capabilities into the framework.

SharePoint 2016 customers with on-premises release should have SharePoint Framework GA in 2017. Earlier in the month we discussed SharePoint's slow growth amongst businesses. Organizations are adopting the service but admit getting employees to move from previous clients is hard.
