Microsoft HoloLens: Independent Developer Showcases Classic Nintendo Games in Mixed Reality

Andrew Peterson has created a 3D NES emulator to bring classic Nintendo titles to Microsoft’s HoloLens headset. The emulator is the latest example of the power of HoloLens as a potential gaming platform.

We are going through a gaming revolution. Virtual reality will change the way in which we consume entertainment. While 's HoloLens device is augmented reality, it too is part of that revolution. Even more so in fact considering its blends content with the real environment.

An independent developer has now shown once more how HoloLens can adapt as a gaming platform. Microsoft's ambitions for the device are as much about productivity as entertainment. Still, as a gaming machine, the product has huge potential. Andrew Peterson is showing that with his N3S Nintendo emulator port for the headset.

The emulator means classic Nintendo titles like Tetris and Super Mario Bros are playable in an augmented environment. Peterson created a custom NES emulator can port 2D graphics games into a 3D content in mixed reality. The classic games certainly look good on the headset, but there are still some limitations.

Availability

As Peterson says, the emulator is still in an alpha phase and comes with some bugs:

“The HoloLens won't run most games full speed, especially when the editor is built-in and people make more complicated 3D meshes for the sprites. I've also had to hand-tune and optimize the app for HoloLens in a way that won't work with many games to get a consistent enough FPS.”

Peterson has created an official website to discuss the HoloLens 3D NES emulator. He has also created the source code on GitHub.

In July, we spoke to Dutch developer CapitolaVR. The company was among the first to port Pokémon GO to the HoloLens. The release showed the power of Microsoft's device. In our interview, David Robustelli, Co-Founder and Head of Digital at Capitola.nl also discussed the limitations of HoloLens.
