Microsoft Azure Search Blob and Table Indexer Portal Announced in Preview

Both Azure Search Blob and Table Indexer Portal are now available to Azure customers in preview form. The release makes searching data in app development easier thanks to a simple interface.

The Azure Search blob and table indexer portal support have been moved into preview today. made the announcement through Evan Boyle, a software engineer at Azure Search. The company official blog post states that Office documents can now be searched in a simple way.

Indeed, Boyle points out that HTML, PDF, and other documents can be searched through the Import Data tool. Users can accomplish searches in just a few clicks. The previews of Azure Search blob and table indexer portal offer an easier to use UI.

The release is important for developers building apps through Azure. More specifically, in the development process, data is hard to nail down as it comes from so many places. The search blob makes it easier to “ingest” these data sources and find what is needed faster.

Quicker Data Searches

A simple interface means users can select accounts and containers within a subscription. Moreover, the indexer will find metadata fields, open documents, extract and past text into the content field, and suggest indexes. Microsoft explains the process on its blog:

“We've provided simple user interfaces to pick accounts and containers from within your subscription. Perhaps you want to index blobs containing an Outlook email archive, or create a resume search application to streamline your hiring process.”

Microsoft has provided more details on the process of using the new previews. The company has specific articles tackling both indexing and blob storage through the API. Also, more information on the Azure Search feature is available here. As always, Microsoft is also seeking feedback from customers to help improve the service before GA launch.

The company describes blob storage as: “Azure Blob storage is a service that stores unstructured data in the cloud as objects/blobs. Blob storage can store any type of text or binary data, such as a document, media file, or application installer. Blob storage is also referred to as object storage.”

Back in April, the company debuted Cool Blob Storage on Azure for 1 cent per GB per month. Microsoft says that the Cool data attribute is good for data that is stored for a long time and is not accessed frequently. Azure Blob accounts will allow users to access both Hot and Cool tiers to store data.
