Since the started rolling out at the start of the month, there have been some issues. Most notably, there have been instances where the upgrade has frozen and made PCs freeze with it. On Monday, issued a workaround for the problem while it worked on a fix. However, the company has still not been able to find a solution.

Instead, the thread in which the problem was first acknowledged has been locked. Microsoft says that it is still working on finding a fix. In the meantime, that company has posted more workarounds to go with the ones added on Monday. Once a universally stable solution is found, the company will issue a patch for the Anniversary Update.

To help with its investigation, Microsoft has collected log files and user reports. The company has confirmed that problem is related to separate Solid State Drives. More specifically, when the update is installed on an SSD apart from the drive that stores apps and data.

New Workaround

Microsoft continues to say that only a “small set of users” have been affected by the freezing issue. For everyone else, the Anniversary Update is installing without problems. Some users have posted their own workarounds and Microsoft has supported these and said they work.

“In addition to the workaround mentioned, the community has also reported a number of their own solutions including logging into a second account (which then fixed the first one) or uninstall of an older antivirus program and then installing the latest version.”

The decision to close the 49-page thread came because it kept being derailed. Users were heading there with any unrelated Anniversary Update issue or question. Microsoft says it wants the focus to be on finding the fix, so decided to lock the thread down. If you experience this problem, you can still provide feedback to the company. Microsoft adds it will update the locked thread when new information is available.
