Xbox One Tops Console Sales in US through July

A rare victory for Microsoft’s Xbox One saw it topple the PS4 as the best-selling console in the United States last month.

After a tough start, 's continues to perform well. It was actually the best-selling console in the United States during the month of July. The news comes just a week after Microsoft launched the new, smaller, with beefed up specs.

Data from marker-tracking company NPD shows that the Xbox One outsold Sony's PS4 during July. That marks a rare win for Microsoft's console against is rival. Sony has dominated the 8th generation of console hardware. The PS4 has almost constantly topped monthly sales charts in the US and globally since it launched.

While analysts chase the numbers, Microsoft has been playing a long game with the Xbox One. The console is almost certain to continue to trail behind the PS4. Sony's console has built a huge lead in terms of sales and will not be caught. However, it does not necessarily matter.

Growing Success

It is worth remembering that the device got off to a torrid start. Gamers were not please with Microsoft's living-room-Box aspirations for the console. The company was accused of putting gamers last, whereas Sony centered the PS4 on gamers. Also, the Xbox One shipped with Kinect at an extra cost.

Since then Microsoft has resolved those issues and Xbox One has performed well. However, increased sales have led to falling revenues. The company cut the price of the console to $250 (base) in the US, which has impacted revenue. Microsoft was still happy with the sales result through July:

We're honored that Xbox One was the best-selling console in the U.S. in July, and that total gaming hours on Xbox consoles globally were up 18 percent over last year, reaching 1.55 billion hours.”

Earlier in the month, Microsoft launched the Xbox One S. The console is 40% smaller than the original version and has 4K support and Bluetooth connectivity. Sales will likely continue to stay consistently high with the new console available and the Holiday Season approaching.
