Microsoft Offering Firmware Update for Surface 3

However, the company has once again failed to provide a changelog. It is a standard practice for Surface updates, a frustrating one considering the firmware patch started rolling out on Monday.

is issuing a for the Surface 3 this week. However, the company has typically failed to offer details of the changes. There is no changelog present on Microsoft's update page, even though the update started yesterday. The company has a habit of doing this with Surface firmware releases.

The firmware upgrade was spotted by Paul Thurrott. If you are an owner of the Surface 3, you should see the firmware on Windows Update. It is listed as “System Firmware Update – 8/8/2016,” which means it has been available for two days. However, a quick check of Microsoft's update history page shows no changelog yet.

For some reason, the company is never in a rush to tell users what is included in a patch. It usually takes 24 to 48 hours for Microsoft to issue the changelog, but we are passed that time frame now. Either way, users are getting an update, so if you have it, drop us a comment and let us know what changes you see.

Discontinued

The Surface 3 is the most affordable of Redmond's Surface line. It is a part of the current generation hardware line up alongside the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book. However, Microsoft announced in June that it will be ending production of the Surface 3 at the end of the year.

“Since launching Surface 3 over a year ago, we have seen strong demand and satisfaction amongst our customers. Inventory is now limited and by the end of December 2016, we will no longer manufacture Surface 3 devices.”

As we wrote at the time, the end of production means the possibility of getting a reduced price tablet:

“Yes, the 128GB variant is no longer available. The two remaining versions are discounted too, with the 64GB Wi-Fi available for $399 (previously $499) and the 64GB LTE now yours for $499, down from $599. However, heading to the end of the year, don't be surprised if the price of the Surface 3 falls further and you can get yourself a real bargain.”
