On Tuesday, released 's first major update since launch. Since then, they haven't been sitting around – two major updates have already been confirmed for next year.

Rumours of a and 3 have been circulating for a while. When Dona Sarkar confirmed that Redstone 2 will start rolling out to Windows Insiders this month, it was no shock. The early confirmation of another major update comes as a bit of a suprise, however.

The news was hidden away in a long blog post about the Anniversary Update by Senior Product Marketing Manager Nathan Mercer:

“Based on feedback from organizations moving to Windows 10, this will be our last feature update for 2016, with two additional feature updates expected in 2017.”

A public release period for was not mentioned, nor were any new features. However, internal reports suggest that an overhaul of the action center is on the list.

Redstone 2 Action Center Re-design

A document sent to MSPoweruser hints that Action Center changes were agreed to after internal discussion. The images provided focus primarily on the mobile experience, but the changes could be coming to desktop too.

Separate “Actions” and “Toggles” buttons are shown, and  there also appears to be a more accessible brightness slider. As with all leaks, this one should be taken with a grain of salt. There's no way to tell if the document was faked, even though it does look legitimate.

Microsoft has not yet hinted at an Action Center upgrade, but this could be because it's still in development. Redstone 2 is rumored to be mobile-centric, so such a change would make sense.

We can also expect the Universal Windows Platform to be extended in Redstone 2. This would continue the company's new vision, as well as its CEO's. A stronger focus on HoloLens would also make sense as the devices' development continues.

Whatever the case, Windows Insiders will discover it soon enough. Redstone 2 features will begin shipping to them mid-month, so we will soon find out what it has in store. The features of Redstone 3 are still a mystery, but we'll keep you updated as rumors surface.
