Microsoft Cuts Price of 500GB Xbox One to $249

The interesting price cut for the 500GB Xbox One comes just a week before Microsoft rolls out the Xbox One S, which starts at $299 at launch.

Microsoft has made the current 500GB Xbox One available to customers in the United States for $249. The offer is exclusive to the US is seems and gives consumers a chance to pick up the OG Xbox One ahead of the launch of the Xbox One S.

The deal was confirmed on Twitter by Larry Hryb, Director of Programming at Xbox. In his tweet, Hryb says the offer is for a limited time, but did not say exactly how long. It is logical that Microsoft is pushing out some extra Xbox One units before the Xbox One S drops in a week’s time.

On Amazon, it is the ‘Name Your Game’ bundle that is on sale at $249. This particular package consists of an 500GB Xbox One and a digital copy of one of four games. The titles to choose from are Forza Motorsport 6, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, or Rare Replay.

While it is good that the Xbox One has been reduced in price, we are left asking who exactly will be buying this. The Xbox One S is launching in nine days, it is 40% smaller than the current console and upscaled 4K performance. Other notable new features are a built-in power supply, IR blaster, improved control, and Bluetooth support.

Xbox One S

The base 500GB Xbox One S will cost $299, which is only $50 more than the current deal. So we imagine most customers will be waiting the extra week to pick up the new console.

Having said that, it is obvious what Microsoft is doing with this sale and we’re torn on whether it is clever or cheeky.

Let us know what you think. Will you be picking up this bundle at an admittedly appealing price?
