Microsoft Simplifies HoloLens App Creation Process

New GitHub repositories offer HoloLens developers a new Build Windows tool to help make the app creation process easier. This will hopefully help Microsoft get more content.

HoloLens developer kits are now out in the wild, through the fifth wave in fact. wants developers to back up its augmented reality hardware with content. Doing so has now become easier because Microsoft has launched new tools to make application creation easier.

Microsoft's open source developer platform, HoloToolkit, now features the new tools for easier app creation. Developers have been able to access the tools for the last few days. Microsoft merged them with the toolkit, creating a new Build Windows when devs enter a Unity project. The company says users can turn off the Build Windows feature if they choose.

Faster iteration with the device is accomplished thanks to the automated windows, Microsoft's release shows. Simplifying the process for creating HoloLens applications means the frustrating manual tasks have been removed.

One Click Creation

Unity projects are created with one click, with the user then able to build the Visual Studio solution, prepare the appx, and then send it to the HoloLens (either the actual device or an emulator. The tools are available in the HoloToolkit and HoloToolkit-Unity repositories on GitHub.

Just last week, Microsoft kicked off the fifth wave of HoloLens Developer Edition devices. The roll out puts the AR device in the hands of even more developer. Microsoft has yet to announce an official launch date for the product. HoloLens will cost a lot. Content will have to be in place before launch, Microsoft insists.

Allowing developers to create apps for the device more easily is definitely one way to get more content for HoloLens.
