Power BI Now Supports R Visuals Reports and Dashboards

The recent slew of Power BI updates continues as Microsoft confirmed the service now supports R visuals, making Power BI even more accessible.

has announced a pretty big new feature for Power BI, with the service now supporting reports and dashboard with R visuals. The company says this update to the service gives Power BI much more flexibility and gives it more analytic depth.

R visuals are fully integrated into Power BI, a move Microsoft knew would score it more users as R language is already used by millions. Customers will be able to filter and cross filter R visuals in service reports and pin them to dashboards.

Microsoft is giving users the chance to try the feature through a Power BI Desktop file with R scripts. It can be opened in the Power BI Desktop and users can publish reports to see R visuals, although the company says this technology underlines Power BI and users may not necessarily be aware the R visuals are in action.

“Authoring of R visuals is done in Power BI Desktop, and then published to the Power BI service. After inserting the R visual type on the report canvas, the author can then drag data into the values fields, and finally paste the R script into the R script editor pane. Once the authoring is done, the new report containing R visuals has to be published to the Power BI service.”

Sharon Laivand, who wrote the blog announcing R visual support took to the comment section to confirm Microsoft is working on some future updates for support of R language in Power BI. Users who said they cannot embed were told that the company is working on embedding support, although did not commit to it launching anytime soon.

It has been a busy week for Power BI announcements. A new update for the service introduced Shape Map View, Azure Data Connectors and Row-Level Security, while a new barcode scanner for iOS was also launched.
