Microsoft Updates Skype for Business on Mac

Microsoft has announced the second phase of the Skype for Business Mac Preview, bringing a new set of functionalities over features introduced in the first phase.

In this latest update, allows for Business users to see other users' status and start an IM conversation. It also brings support for Group Video Calling and peer-to-peer calling, which will allow users to call others for a meeting or just a private call.

According to the official blog post, Phase 2 Mac Preview comes with new features as well as bug fixes.

Features:

  • Contacts and presence—See whether a contact is offline or online, whether they're busy, in a meeting or available, and easily start an IM conversation.
  • Peer-to-peer (P2P) calling—Call other Skype for Business users directly using voiceover IP.
  • Group video calling—Now you can see up to four meeting participants simultaneously.
  • Conversation history—View a list of previous conversations and restart them at will.”

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed an issue where screen sharing preview was not updated when content or number of screens changed.
  • Removed notification that ‘you are about to leave a meeting' from chats.
  • Call controls will no longer be hidden if the mouse cursor is within the conversation view.
  • Fixed a crash when ending a call.
  • Fixed a defect where the camera would turn on while not in a call.
  • Fixed a defect where chat messages would disappear after clicking send.
  • Fixed a defect where switching audio/video device in 1:1 calls wasn't working.
  • Fixed a defect where the app was not respecting the system proxy exclusion settings.
  • Fixed a crash while in a group video call
  • Fixed a bug where the participant name wouldn't match the avatar/video in a conference call
  • Fixed various defects around incoming audio and video calls.
  • Various other minor defect fixes and polish.

Paul Cannon, the senior product marketing manager for Skype for Business team, stressed on the growth of the preview build and noted:

“There has been tremendous interest in the preview, with over 22,000 individuals, representing more than 7,000 organizations, signing up since it opened on April 26. We are now at capacity for the number of preview participants and are no longer accepting registrations.”

He added that the update is already available for download and Skype For Business will automatically check for it each time when the app starts.

Microsoft also plans to release the third phase of preview functionality later this summer. The Redmond giant is working on calling/voice support and targets to make the app generally available this fall. In between, it will also release minor updates to resolve app issues, if any.
