Microsoft Debuts SharePoint for iOS

The recently announced SharePoint for iOS app has now been officially dropped off on the AppStore, arriving on iOS before Windows 10 and Android.

Users of Apple’s iOS can now get more Microsoft productivity on their iPhone with the launch of SharePoint on the platform. Microsoft announced the service for iOS recently and has now officially rolled out SharePoint to the AppStore. The service sits with Office and enhances Microsoft’s productivity position on the rival platform.

SharePoint lets iOS users access popular and recent files, arrange and edit lists on team sites, and manage their own site activity.

Expect Microsoft to announce added functionality to the app as time goes on, but at launch SharePoint on iOS has a solid list of features to get users started. Customers can access their sites on the cloud and in-house through multiple accounts. Switching between accounts is easy, Microsoft says, while SharePoint Online and versions 2013 and 2016 are supported.

A sites tab makes navigating to a site simple, allowing users to search for popular sites or those that a frequently visited. Tapping a site will grant instant access, where it can be shared. The application is supposed to make access to team sites easy on a mobile device, with intranet search included in the app. SharePoint uses Microsoft Graph and Office Graph to allow users to see other users’ workflows and organize their team site portals.

Microsoft has also announced the following features that are making their debut on SharePoint for iOS at launch:

Check out recent and popular files. In a team site, get to your recent or popular files quickly to view or share them, and have full access to your document libraries using the new integration with the OneDrive app. Edit your files easily using Office Mobile apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.

Use the Links tab to find promoted links for your organization. Curated by your SharePoint admin for all employees, these links get you to the organizational resources and sites that you care about.

Search. Enterprise Search is available throughout the app and results are organized into sites, files and people.

Find and browse for people you work with. Tap on a user to get to their contact card and to see who they work with and what they are working on.

As we have seen with some other services from Redmond, the company has decided to debut the mobile SharePoint app on iOS. This means Apple’s platform is getting the service before Windows 10 Mobile and before Android, although Microsoft said those platforms will be getting SharePoint in the coming weeks.

You can check out the iOS app through the AppStore.
