Microsoft Azure Government Update Enhances VM Image Support and Introduces Premium Storage

The latest upgrade for Azure Government lets customer select premium storage when provisioning virtual machines, while Microsoft also introduced more preconfigured VM images.

Government has scored some added functionality the company announced on Monday. In an official blog post, John Bruno Senior Director, Azure said the company has listened to customer feedback and added several new features to the services, with all additions available immediately.

The government-focused version of the Azure cloud service allows government agencies to have a secure cloud community. The new update enhances the service, focusing on improving the virtual machine are of Azure, adding premium storage options and new image support.

Azure Government customers are now getting support for premium storage in virtual machines disks. Users can choose the Azure Premium Storage option when provisioning DS-series virtual machines through and the Azure CLI. Microsoft says the use of Premium Storage on solid state drives will offer improved performance.

Premium Storage provides high-performance, low-latency disk support for virtual machines running I/O-intensive workloads.

Also added in the new update to Azure Government is more support for virtual machine images. Redmond has expanded the number of pre-configured VM images, allowing customers to provision VMs more quickly and easily by utilizing pre-installed configurations. The new image types are:

Windows Server Remote Desktop Session Host on Windows Server 2012 R2
Windows Server Remote Desktop Session Host with Microsoft ProPlus
SharePoint Server 2016 Trial
Enterprise 2015 Update 2 with Azure SDK 2.9 on Windows Server 2012 R2
