Opera Mini Gets Ad Block Feature on Windows Phones

The Opera Mini web browser has gained a surprising ad block feature in its latest update, following a similar release to the desktop version of the browser earlier in the year.

-

Opera has dropped something of a surprise by announcing an ad block feature for its Opera Mini web browser on Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile. The feature was not expected considering the company recently said that it would not be revealing anything new for Windows mobile devices in the near future.

The ability to block banner ads from websites is rolling out as part of update Version 9.1. Of course, the reasons for an ad blocker are well known, especially on a mobile device where websites will load faster and data usage will be lower if an ad blocker is installed.

Ad block software has numerous advantage, with a study from PageFair/Adobe showed that ad-blocking software has more than double between 2014 and 2015. The reputation for ads to take bandwidth and sometimes even carry malicious content on insecure webpages have led to users adopting the software more frequently.

Needless to say, there also benefits to seeing ads, not least that they allow websites to make revenue, but we will take our business hats back off.

You may remember that Opera rolled out an ad block feature in March for PC, with the company saying that the result would produce 45% faster browsing compared to competitors.
