announced Minecraft: Education Edition in beta form yesterday, showing the company's serious ambitions for the blocky world-building title. However, Redmond and developer Mojang also continue to push has the giant entertainment game that it is.

The company announced today that the previously rumored Battle mini-game for Minecraft: Console Edition will be landing on June 21. This version of the game is already known to PC users of Minecraft as Battle is essentially an enhanced copy of the popular fan-made Hunger Games desktop mode that is common on community forums.

Battle allows up to eight players to enter an online world where they will need to access chests loaded with gear to compete against each other over three maps. The contents of the chest vary but players need to get the goodies quick as they do offer an advantage. Luckily the chests fill up again eventually, but it definitely pays to be one of the first to open them.

At the moment, the update is limited to three maps, but Microsoft says more will be made available over time, with each new addition costing $2.99. Battle will arrive on the 21st as a free update to those running Minecraft: Console Edition.

Microsoft recently announced that Minecraft has surpassed 100 million unit sales across all versions and platforms, making it the second most successful video game of all time, behind Tetris. Gamers running the title on the Xbox 360 were awarded a special skin pack last month when Microsoft celebrated Minecraft's fourth birthday on the platform.

Mojang and Microsoft have also recently struck a deal to bring a special version of the game to China, opening up a new market.
