Microsoft Warns Free Windows 10 Upgrades Ending on July 29th

-

The company has reconfirmed that will cease to be free after July 29th, ending a yearlong free update program for the platform.

The good times are soon to be over for those wanting to upgrade to Windows 10, with reconfirming today that the free update promotion is closing soon. Windows 10 is currently available for free on eligible PCs running both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, but that freebie will be ending on July 29th.

That is incidentally a year to the day since the platform has been available for older machines for free, and despite predictions to the contrary the company is sticking to its schedule. It is hard to argue that the free upgrade program has been a success as Windows 10 is now used by 300 million machines, and a vast number of those are old Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 machines that have been upgraded.

From July 30th, those wanting to get Windows 10 will now have to fork out $119 to grab the software:

The free upgrade offer will end on July 29 and we want to make sure you don't miss out. After July 29th, you'll be able to continue to get Windows 10 on a new device, or purchase a full version of Windows 10 Home for $119.

It is interesting that those getting free Windows before the cut off in two months will almost certainly be able to get the upcoming Anniversary Update too. That huge upgrade is set to land in the summer, with June the mooted month for release.

Those running Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 will have the newest full build of the platform and a bunch of brand new features that are part of the Anniversary Update. Of course, they will get that after July 29th as well, but will have to pay 120 bucks for the privilege.
