Microsoft’s Xbox Live online gaming portal has millions of users and is arguably the leading service of its kind, which makes it doubly disappointing when the service is down.
It is especially frustrating considering Microsoft charges a subscription from users to use Xbox Live, and Redmond seems to understand this.
The company is even considering offering compensation to users who missed out while their Xbox Live service was down.
While the giving of compensation is not concrete, Microsoft’s Larry Hryb said on Reddit that he had passed on compensation requests to the Xbox team for them to consider the proposal of awarding money back for when the service is down.
I’ve taken some of the more thoughtful comments and shared them with a few folks on the Xbox team to make them aware of this request. That’s about all I’ve got right now – but when I am back in the office I am going to stop by and chat 1:1 with some folks about this as well.
Recently the Xbox Live service has crashed a number of times, seeing some significant downtime and stopping games from playing online and customers from taking advantage of several content services. While it seems unlikely that Microsoft will start a compensation program, it would help appease disgruntled consumers who pay for something they don’t always get.
It’s not all bad news for Xbox Live though as the service continues to best Sony’s PlayStation Network, despite the PS4 vastly outselling the Xbox One. Back in January Microsoft revealed that it broke records for user engagement, with Dec. 28 2015 seeing more users on the service than ever before.
The Windows Store will also be coming to the Xbox One in a future update, allowing gamers on Xbox Live take advantage of the numerous resources on the Store.
