Microsoft to Launch SQL Server for Linux

-

The launch of will bring the relational database management system to the platform for the first time.

dropped a bit of a surprise by announcing a version of SQL Server that will run on the Linux platform.
The announcement was made by Microsoft's Scott Guthrie, who is the company's executive vice president of Cloud and Enterprise Group.

A private preview of the Linux SQL has been made available this week, sporting the core relational database of the 2016 Server.

SQL Server 2016 will be made available for Windows later this year, with the pre-release Community Technology Preview 3.3 launched February 3.

Introducing SQL Server 2016 on Linux, while arguably a surprise, actually means Microsoft software will be making its debut on Linux servers. At the moment, Redmond's software is not running on Linux servers, so the introduction of the SQL Server will be a big change.

It is arguably a necessary change for Microsoft too, considering nearly 25% of all Azure cloud service servers are powered by the open source Linux platform.

However, while Linux is open source, Microsoft will keep the Server closed and will instead make it useable on the platform. The company is also holding off on debuting all features on Linux, and instead will firstly offer the core feature set before adding more depending on customer demand.

SQL Server on Linux will provide customers with even more flexibility in their data solution. One with mission-critical performance, industry-leading TCO, best-in-class security, and hybrid cloud innovations – like Stretch Database which lets customers access their data on-premises and in the cloud whenever they want at low cost – all built in.

SQL Server 2016 will comes with rebuilt in-memory database features which Microsoft says will perform workloads between 30-100 times faster than the 2014 version. The new SQL will also support encryption for data, while also offering analytic support.
