Azure Marketplace: Microsoft is now offering Debian GNU/Linux for virtual machines

-

Microsoft has announced the availability of Debian GNU/Linux in collaboration with credativ in the Azure Marketplace.

Starting today, Azure users are able to use Debian-based virtual machines. Debian is a free operating system that comes with over 43,000 packages and runs in many architectures and even different kernels.

Both built by credativ, Debian 7 (codename “wheezy”) and Debian 8 (codename “jessie”) are the latest versions of the operating system that customers can acquire. The 64-bit version of Debian GNU/Linux for Intel architecture is the most used Linux distributions in the market.

Principal program manager of Microsoft’s Open Source Technology Center Michael Kelley states that Microsoft is excited to bring Debian to their “family of endorsed and supported open source solutions in Microsoft Azure”. “With this announcement, we continue building strong ties with the open source ecosystem. Including communities and partners such as credativ,”  Kelley added.

Microsoft and credativ’s new connection

Debian GNU/Linux collaborated with credativ, an independent consulting and services company who offers comprehensive open source services and technical support. Microsoft works together with credativ to provide the most updated versions of Debian as Marketplace images.

With the same intention to offer up-to-date versions of Debian OS, CEO of credativ’s Michael Meskes is positive about this collaboration with Microsoft.

“We are excited that Debian is now available for all users of Microsoft Azure. In collaboration with Microsoft Azure’s Linux and open source developer support teams, credativ and its Open Source Support Centers will partner to bring current and future versions of Debian to Microsoft Azure and act as a liaison between users and community.”

Even before the announcement of Debian GNU/Linux in Azure VMs, Microsoft already supports a number of Debian products in Hyper-V 2012 R2.

“With today’s announcement, we continue our commitment to customer choice and flexibility in the cloud”, said Nicole Herskowitz, senior director of product marketing, Microsoft Azure. “Debian brings a thriving community and ecosystem and an important technology stack to Azure that is exciting for our customers and partners working with Linux and open source technologies,” said Nicole Herskowitz, senior director of product marketing of Microsoft Azure.

To start with Debian in Azure, simply select Debian from the Azure Marketplace or refer to the images in your Azure Resource Manager templates.
