Google's DIY virtual reality Kit might soon face some competition from Microsoft's own virtual reality box called “VR Kit”. The company, through its Russian website, is attracting developers to an event which will use its new VR-Kits.

Microsoft Russia is holding a hackathon event on October 17, and according to company's website, Virtual reality will be a major highlight of the coming event. The developers at the event will be provided with a “VR-Kit”, which will work exactly in the same way like the Google Cardboard did.

The virtual reality Kit from Google created a 3D effect and turned your phone into a virtual reality headset with cardboard and a pair of 40mm focal distance lenses. It also utilized magnets, rubber bands and Velcro to keep everything in place.

Users will have to place their smartphones in the fully assembled box, and see their phone's screen through the lens placed at a specific distance inside the box.

The cut out design and specs of Google Cardboard were made available to all, which was later used by OnePlus and other manufacturers. Since it's only cardboard, same is expected from Microsoft as well, but as for now, there is no information about company's further plans for its VR Kit.

The Kit will appear at the Hackathon, which is accepting apps in major categories including best corporate apps, games, and education. A winner in each category will be selected by the company, and will be awarded with a VR Kit to keep building their application.

A winner in each category will be selected by the company. For participating in the event, find the link for signing up here. (Russian)
